Start with Pennsylvania UJS Case Search for statewide appellate, Court of Common Pleas, Magisterial District Court, citation, and calendar searches. York County routes Common Pleas and Magisterial District Court records through that system. UJS says public web docket sheets are free, but it also warns that new entries from filing offices may not appear right away. It is a docket and calendar source, not a Pennsylvania State Police criminal-history background check.

For civil and family records held by the Prothonotary, use the York County Prothonotary public search. It supports case number, participant name, participant address, reference number, case category, date range, attorney-in-name searching, address display, and sorting. Criminal public documents follow a different path: docket sheets are in UJS, while full documents are viewed at the Clerk of Courts office or requested by email at CoCRecordsRequest@YorkCountyPA.gov with the docket number and document type.

1. Choose the record family first: civil/family, criminal, traffic, magisterial, probate, or marriage.
2. Use UJS for statewide docket sheets, citation searches, calendar events, and Common Pleas or MDJ case status.
3. Use the Prothonotary portal for York County civil and family case searches when the Prothonotary is the filing office.
4. For criminal documents beyond the docket sheet, contact the Clerk of Courts with the docket number and exact document type.
5. For estate or marriage records, use the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court channels instead of the Prothonotary.

Types of York County Court Records

York County court records are divided by office and case type. Civil and family files belong to the Prothonotary. Criminal files belong to the Clerk of Courts. Magisterial District Courts handle traffic cases, minor criminal cases, small claims, landlord-tenant disputes, bail, and preliminary hearings before some misdemeanor and felony cases move to Common Pleas.

• Family records include divorce, custody, paternity, conciliation, PFA, and standby guardianship categories, with remote access limits.
• Criminal records include felony and misdemeanor dockets, charges, pleas, trials, sentences, costs, fines, restitution, and expungement filings.
• Traffic and summary matters are usually MDJ records and may be searched by citation number through UJS.
• Probate and Orphans' Court records include estates, wills, guardianships, adoptions, and marriage licensing, with special access rules.

That distinction is important when a certified copy or legal proof is needed for filing, appeal, title, or benefits work.

What York County Court Records Show

A public docket may show the case's main identifiers and event history. The level of detail depends on the court, case type, and access rule. A civil case may show parties, claims, filings, judgments, writs, or liens. A criminal record may show charges, OTN, bail, arraignment, preliminary hearing, information, plea, trial, sentence, and payment obligations. A traffic matter may show citation number, offense, MDJ office, disposition, fine, costs, and PAePay eligibility.

The Clerk of Courts public records page gives two document-access channels for criminal court records. Public documents may be viewed in person at the Clerk of Courts Office. Paper copies that leave the office require the current fee paid in advance. The second channel is email to CoCRecordsRequest@YorkCountyPA.gov with the docket number and the document type requested. Docket sheets remain available through UJS for York County and every Pennsylvania county.

York County Court Records Access

Court case access is governed by the Pennsylvania judiciary's Case Records Public Access Policy. Agency records may also involve the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law, but a case file is not handled only as a general agency record. Restricted York County Court Records

Some York County court records are public only in part, not online, or not public at all. The public-access policy restricts confidential information forms, confidential documents, sealed and protected information, criminal victim, witness, and juror identifying information in remote access, some transcripts, and in forma pauperis petitions. Family actions may be limited remotely to docket, orders, and opinions. Probate, estate, and fiduciary matters may be similarly limited.

Juvenile records are restricted by Pennsylvania law and court rules. The Clerk of Courts receives juvenile court records, but access is limited. Adoption records are handled through Orphans' Court and Common Pleas and are not ordinary public records. Mental-health and incapacity records are also restricted. Expungement or limited-access relief may remove or block eligible criminal-history information under Pennsylvania law, but eligibility depends on the docket, charges, disposition, and statute.

The main court offices are at the York County Judicial Center. Use the office tied to the record type. Civil and family records go to the Prothonotary. Criminal records go to the Clerk of Courts. Estate, guardianship, adoption, and marriage matters go to the Register of Wills or Clerk of Orphans' Court. Calling or emailing with a docket number, party name, and document type saves time.
